The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the first model in the Galaxy S series with a built-in S pen. However, looking at the main body design, it seems to be the successor to the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G released in 2020. On the other hand, the camera inherits the performance of the 2021 model Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.
So I compared the appearance of these three models with the camera.
First, let's compare the size and shape from the front side. In this article, we will arrange the three terminals in the order of [Left] Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G-[Center] Galaxy S22 Ultra-[Right] Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.
Looking at the body shape, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G and Galaxy S22 Ultra are almost the same. Both of these can be said to be sibling models. The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has rounded corners and a slightly different design.
The body size of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G is 164.8 x 77.2 x 8.1 mm, 208 grams. The Galaxy S22 Ultra weighs 163.3 x 77.9 x 8.9 mm, 228 grams. Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is 165.1 x 75.6 x 8.9 mm, 227 grams. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is easy to use the S pen. The vertical and horizontal sizes are close to the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, and the thickness and weight are equivalent to the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G by installing a high-performance camera.
Next, let's look at the cross-sectional shape of the main body. Again, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G and Galaxy S22 Ultra have almost the same vertical symmetrical shape, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has a tighter side curve at the bottom. In addition, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G and Galaxy S22 Ultra have an S pen stored on the left side of the bottom.
Looking at the camera side, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G and Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G have a very noticeable pedestal. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a protruding camera lens, but it has a neat design because only the lens is placed.
The S pen looks the same in shape on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a pen latency of 9ms to 2.8ms when handwriting, but the shape of the pen itself looks the same as the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G. The compatibility between the two has not been announced. On the other hand, the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G's S pen is not built into the main unit, making it thicker and easier to grip.
Looking only at the pens, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G and Galaxy S22 Ultra S pens look the same in shape, with different nibs. The body of the Galaxy S22 Ultra's S pen has a black color, and the surface material is a slightly soft resin, so the grip is improved.
Let's compare the writing comfort of the S pen. First of all, Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G. The latency of the S Pen is 9ms, which is the same as the Apple Pencil, and it is more comfortable to write than the previous Galaxy Note series.
Next, I wrote this new product, Galaxy S22 Ultra. The latency has been further improved to 2.8ms and it can be written smoothly. When I handwritten it on the pre-installed memo pre-installed Samsung Notes (Galaxy Notes in the Japanese model), I felt that the writing comfort was not much different from the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G. However, when I compared the writing for about 10 minutes, I sometimes wondered if the Galaxy S22 Ultra had a slightly better reaction when the S Pen touched the screen and started writing. If you have been using the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G or Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G and continue handwriting with the S Pen every day on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, you will feel the difference in latency, that is, the comfort of writing little by little.
In addition, the text conversion of handwritten characters will make it Japanese well even with a lot of random writing. It is convenient to be able to easily make a clean copy of the memo.
The last is Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G. This is the same 9ms latency as the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G. The pen is not built into the main body, but it becomes thicker and feels much closer to a commercially available pen. On the other hand, it does not have built-in Bluetooth, and it does not have built-in remote control functions such as camera shutter like the S pen of Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G and Galaxy S22 Ultra. Also, if you want to use an S pen, you have to purchase it separately, and if you do not buy a case that can store the S pen, you may lose the pen.
As a result of comparing using three models of S pens, I felt that the built-in type was more convenient for taking notes anytime and anywhere. The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G and the "S Pen Pro" that also supports the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G can also be used with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. However, the response is inferior to the S pen that comes with the main unit.
Next, let's compare the cameras. The camera of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is almost the same as the camera of the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G in terms of specifications, but the shooting quality has improved, such as strengthening night view shooting. AI has been greatly enhanced, and the latest 4nm process chipsets are used to make photos and videos look beautiful.
First of all, a comparison of 1x shooting. If it's a bright place, you won't see a big difference. It looks like the Galaxy S22 Ultra is one step ahead, such as the blue sky, but the other two models aren't at the level of concern either.
Next, compare with a maximum magnification of 100 times. I think that there are not many people who use 100 times. It may be that there are not many subjects to shoot at such a high magnification, but since the image quality of 100x digital is poor, I think that "I don't feel like shooting". Since the Galaxy S22 Ultra has improved 100x shooting, I will also compare it at the maximum magnification.
The picture is taken of the upper part of the wheelhouse of the ship in the example photograph (arrow).
Since the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G is up to 50 times, I manually enlarged it to 100 times and compared it. It seems that it is reflected as it is, and it is dark overall compared to the other two models. It feels like the Galaxy S22 Ultra is well captured by AI processing. The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is a little sweet.
This is a picture of the meal. The Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G has a weak macro system, and if you shoot close to about 5 cm, the surroundings will be blurred. The Galaxy S22 5G looks brighter than the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.
Comparison of night view modes. For the depiction of the night sky, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has the strongest bluish tint and is well-balanced.
After comparing the three models, it was a natural result that the latest model Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G was comfortable. As for the camera, the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is powerful enough, but if you want to use 100x telephoto, is the Galaxy S22 Ultra better? The food and night view aren't bad on the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G, but the Galaxy S22 Ultra gave better results.
Also, if you are dissatisfied with the camera performance of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, you should replace it with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Actually, I used the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G in the past, but after that I replaced it with the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G (+ S pen). The difference between the Galaxy Note20 5G and the Galaxy S22 Ultra may not be that big if it's just the pen usability, but considering the camera, it's well worth the upgrade.
Since the "Ultra" model has been released in Japan so far, it seems that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will also be sold if it goes well. I would like to ask you to introduce it to Japan as soon as possible.
