リトアニア駐中国大使館閉鎖にまで深刻化した背景

On December 15, 2021, the small Baltic State of Lithuania evacuated all diplomats and their families from their embassy in Beijing. In response to the establishment of a "Taiwan representative office" in Lithuania, the Chinese government has put pressure on Lithuania to return the identity cards of Lithuanian diplomats stationed in China by December 14. Lithuania ordered to return home as soon as possible to ensure the safety of diplomats. According to an article published in British Economist magazine on December 18, the establishment of Lithuania's "Taiwan Representative Office" unilaterally decided to demote China's diplomatic relations with Lithuania from an embassy to an office. Lithuania withdrew diplomats and family members and temporarily closed the embassy. Lithuania acknowledges that the "Taiwan representative office" is not unusual, but even if Taiwan is asked to act as a "Taipei representative office", Taiwan will respond. There should be no reason to show friendliness in such matters and the opportunity to promote relations with Lithuania. On the other hand, China's actions should be in accordance with their principles. This may be to contain similar cases, but it is not considered wise to simply increase the number of enemies. Because of the name problem, on August 10, China requested the mutual recall of ambassadors, and in view of the formal approval of the "Taiwan Representative Office" in November, it unilaterally decided on November 21 to downgrade diplomatic relations to the relationship between the two offices. This is a development described in this article. Of course, the background is that Lithuania withdrew from "171st" in May, in August the Lithuanian authorities announced that there were security flaws in Huawei and Xiaomi's 5G smartphones, and in October Taiwan's economic mission visited Lithuania (as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia). It can be pointed out that actions that China considers unfriendly continue, such as the Lithuanian Parliament's planned visit to Taiwan in November.
