More than a year has passed since the US Department of Commerce imposed a de facto embargo on Huawei and its affiliates. As a result, it is no longer possible to install Google services on new Huawei models, but by repeatedly extending the expiration date of the temporary general permit (TGL), the company's Android products equipped with Google services can be updated. I continued.
However, it is reported that TGL will expire on the 13th (US local time, the same below), and it may not be possible to update conventional products in the future.
In May 2019, the U.S. Department of Commerce officially added Huawei and 68 affiliates to the "Entity List," which prohibits U.S. companies from trading without government permission. By issuing TGL immediately after that, it was possible for Huawei to maintain the existing communication network and update the software for smartphones that have already been released.
The TGL has been extended as described above, but in May the US Department of Commerce added "Expected Final 90-Day Extension" and extended it until August 13. And on August 14, without any statement, the Washington Post received a statement from the Ministry of Commerce that the license had expired.
The license provided "an opportunity for Huawei product users and telecommunications providers to rush to move to alternative suppliers while temporarily continuing to operate their devices and existing networks," the Commerce Department said in an email. I am saying. The ultimate goal of banning Huawei products remains unwavering, suggesting that there is ample grace period for that.
On the other hand, a Google spokesperson also said that the company has allowed updates to be distributed based on TGL. No further comments are rejected.
Google recommended in February on Android's official help not to sideload apps to unqualified Huawei devices (install stray apps without going through a legitimate store such as Google Play). In the future, this "unqualified" may include devices equipped with Google services.
Only the fact that "TGL has expired" and the general principle that Google "allows update distribution as long as there is TGL" were confirmed this time. At a later date, the Department of Commerce may announce an extension again, and Huawei device enthusiasts with Google services want to connect their hopes.
