Get the strongest movie camera LUMIX S1H!Exterior review Sumahon !!

I purchased Panasonic's L-mount full-size mirrorless "LUMIX S1H (DC-S1H)" released on September 25, 2019.

Why did you buy it? The author, who has been using GH5 so far, introduces the reason why he decided to purchase S1H. In addition, we will deliver the first impression. (Click here for video version)

  • Until now, I liked Panasonic. However, partly because I wanted to create videos with a single lens, and as a result of emphasizing video performance, I ended up with the LUMIX GH5 and have been using it regularly. The GH5 has no recording time limit and is the first in the world to support 4K/60p.

But the GH5 is fundamentally a Micro Four Thirds. There is also a longing for a larger sensor size, so before the S1H was announced, Panasonic's first full-size "LUMIX S1" was being considered as a successor. Dynamic range, bokeh, low noise, low-light shooting, high resolution... I thought, "Someday, I'll have a full-size sensor."

Pana's full-size lineup positions the S1R as a high-resolution still image, and the S1 as a hybrid that emphasizes video performance. S1 is the only choice at this point.

By the way, the CP+2019 video below was shot entirely with the LUMIX GH5 and touched on the LUMIX S1 as well. (This channel often uses GH5 for shooting)

He touched the S1 with CP+ and was interested in purchasing it. In addition to the image quality unique to full size, the ease of use is similar to that of the GH5. Even though the GH5 has a USB Type-C terminal, it can't be powered from here, but the LUMIX S1 can do it.

I was almost ready to buy the LUMIX S1, but the reason why I didn't buy it on the spring release date is that there are paid video-related updates (4:2:2 10bit, 14+ stop V-Log / V-Gamut, etc.) Because it was said to be "offered this summer". Postpone the purchase. I thought it was too late to provide it, but I was thinking of buying the S1 after the update came out.

However, if you ask me if the LUMIX S1 is ideal, it's not, especially the GH5's vari-angle liquid crystal, which is free to change angles, is hard to throw away, and the S1's 3-axis tilt liquid crystal doesn't seem to suit me. , To be honest, there was also a place where I was at a loss.

However, while waiting for the summer update to S1, something incredible appeared.

In June 2019, Panasonic announced the world's first 6K recording compatible full-size camera "LUMIX S1H" overseas. It is truly a product with the taste of "S1-based professional cinema camera" and "small VARICAM with LUMIX skin (Pana business camera)".

It's a perverted way of saying "Unlimited shooting time with a heat dissipation fan installed". teeth? Heat dissipation fan at a glance? Suddenly my head feels dizzy...

The 24.2 megapixel 35mm full-size CMOS sensor with dual native ISO is equipped with a low-pass filter. Functions equivalent to the paid update of the S1 are already installed at the time of shipment, and support VARICAM-level dynamic range and wide color gamut 14+ stop V-Log/V-Gamut. 6K/24p recording is possible. Moreover, it is equipped with a free-angle touch panel LCD instead of the S1's 3-axis tilt!

In other words, the ideal product for users who shoot videos with a single lens has finally come out. No, are you going beyond your ideals? It is no longer a business or romantic area.

The S1H was initially announced as "released in autumn". And later, it was announced again that it will be released on September 25th in Japan.

Thanks to the delay in providing the update, I was very glad that I didn't have to lament "S1H was better!" after accidentally buying the S1. I feel the kindness of Panasonic in knowing that its products are strongly supported by video users.

On the other hand, the S1 was released in the spring and the S1H in the fall, so we had to wait half a year, so I envy the users who bought the S1 in the spring and enjoyed it! The part that I think is also an ant.

In any case, the LUMIX S series is a hybrid and affordable S1 that can handle both high-resolution still image S1R and video S1H. It's been a lineup.

For now, let's start with a size comparison. I compared it with the LUMIX that I have used so far. It's pretty big, isn't it?

(LUMIX LX100, LUMIX S1H, LUMIX GH5 from left)

Dimensions are for the main body only. Other than LX100, the lens is different.

S1H is quite heavy. It's about 150g heavier than the S1.

In addition, the L-mount 24-105mm S series lens purchased at the same time as the S1H is 680g, so it will be about 1.9kg including the lens. (By the way, here is the lens filter combined with this)

By the way, the LUMIX S1 looks like this. At first glance, it looks just like the S1H.

    (LUMIX S1)

Let's check the appearance of the S1H.

On the S1H, the power on/off is placed in a ring around the shutter key. Where the power button used to be on the S1, the S1H has a red video recording button.

The mode dial is locked, and you turn it while pressing the central button to change the mode. It is a specification preferred by professionals to prevent malfunction.

(I love PeakDesign, so I use Anchor Links to attach the strap. It's nice to be able to easily remove the strap.)

On the side are a microphone, headphones, USB Type-C, and HDMI interfaces, and between them and the free-angle LCD is a heat dissipation fan. With this, you can record infinitely by cooling the heat during recording while cooling. Moreover, it is too perverted to realize drip-proof and dust-proof by installing a heat dissipation fan. You can also charge the main unit with USB Type-C. An ambitious work that removes all barriers to long-term recording such as files, heat, and batteries. The remaining bottleneck is about the SD card.

Slide on the right side to open and close, and the SD card slot will come out. It's nice to have it, it's a double slot specification that you can't go back to once you get used to it. You can take a lot with this! I mainly shoot videos, but I also shoot still images, so I find it convenient to be able to separate the video save slot and still image save slot from the settings.

When connecting to acoustic equipment such as gun mics and condenser mics, it is necessary to secure a separate power supply, but if you use the XLR microphone adapter - "DMW-XLR", it is possible to supply power from the camera body to the microphone with the XLR connector. .

When used in combination with a rig, access to the recording button on the top is difficult, so professional cameras also have a recording button on the front. This unit also has a recording button on the front. Perfect for video professionals.

Equipped with a sync terminal. By converting to BNC using this terminal, TC IN/OUT is possible. Models that can synchronize TC are not often seen even in consumer devices.

For example, the α7III, which is gaining popularity with mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, can output TC, but it does not support IN, and even more so it uses the HDMI terminal, so when synchronizing TC, disconnect the monitor once and synchronize. must be connected to a compatible camera. However, the S1H can synchronize TC while outputting video via HDMI, so a series of tasks can be performed smoothly.

Equipped with a 1.8-inch monochrome status LCD with good outdoor visibility. You can check various statuses. This is useful in situations where it is not always possible to look through the viewfinder or screen.

As long as you are familiar with the software and the buttons, you will not feel any discomfort. If I had to say it, the GH5 was fine with a shallow back key press, while the S1H had a soft and deep stroke, which felt a little strange, but I think I'll get used to it soon.

It is possible to open the LCD screen by removing the slide lock on the bottom.

    (top left of image)

And this is the essential tilt-free angle LCD. That's right, this is it! wonderful!

If you thought, "Why is the 3-axis tilt still half-finished? Wouldn't the vari-angle LCD be enough?", you're wrong. In fact, with the GH5, the vari-angle LCD sometimes interfered when the cable was inserted into the terminal on the left side. However, with the S1H, if you open the tilt, you can freely move the vari-angle LCD without interfering with the cable, so it's comfortable! That's why.

By the way, the S1H's 3.2-inch screen has the same display area size as the S1/S1R, but the top and bottom of the bezel are slightly different, so the S1 Note that the protective film for /S1R may protrude and may not stick. I think you can cut it. I bought a protective glass for S1/S1R and failed. Please be careful. Let's buy S1H compatible products.

I've just started using it, I'm not used to it, and there aren't many examples yet, so I can't say much, but for the time being, the camera shake correction seems to be good.

There is great potential in the abundance of video recording methods. As for the 6K/24p recording, which is the highlight, many people think that even 4K playback devices are not very popular, so recording at a higher resolution than that is excessive.

However, what if you shoot at 6K resolution without moving the camera, zoom up/zoom down, pan/tilt in editing, and the output video is 4K? without compromising resolution. Also, if you apply a warp stabilizer (camera shake correction) to the material in video editing, the resolution will decrease, but if you shoot in 6K in advance, you can output a higher resolution 4K video.

In other words, the material is recorded in 6K as a technique for outputting 4K videos with the highest possible resolution. Don't you think it's ants when you think about it like this?

The thing that bothered me a little is that depending on the situation, AF seems to get lost a lot. The GH5 was also not good at AF at first, and this area was resolved with updates and setting changes. I can't say anything until I use this for a while.

File transfer speed with USB Type-C was almost the same as GH5. The S1H can be charged with a mobile battery that supports USB-PD (USB Power Delivery), so continuous recording is possible for a long time. It can also be used for starscapes and nightscapes. This is the real value of the S1H with a cooling fan!

I think there are times when you just want to focus on handling, so I think it's best to keep a spare battery.

There is a sense of security with a genuine spare battery rather than a compatible one. The genuine product will last longer.

Pana has incorporated professional technology into a consumer mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, and it is the strongest movie camera with full-fledged crazy specifications (in a good way) that can be used by both high-end amateurs and professional video production sites. Ultimate practicality and romance are packed!

I also plan to use it as much as possible, so if you don't mind, please subscribe to the channel.
