A new option for smartphone OS?
Even though the announcement of Windows 11 and the distribution of the developer version have just started, such a projectile has already appeared. I'm using Windows 11 on my smartphone!
Gustave Monce, an engineering student, posted the WIn 11 video on YouTube on his smartphone. He uses the old Windows Phone, the Lumia 950 XL from the Windows 10 Mobile era. About five years ago, Monce led the Lumia WOA project from a difficult time when Windows Phone had a smartphone market share of 2%. With his classmate Bingxing Wang, I've been taking on the challenge of running a desktop operating system on Lumia's 5.7-inch display.
According to an interview with The Verge, Monce and his colleagues have formed a community to run full Windows 10 on Limit 950, and are currently working on a WOA project with about 15 people. I challenged Windows 11 as I did with Windows 10 / Windows 10 X. It's an irresistible challenge for those who like it.
Other than Monce and others, there are other people who are taking on the challenge of running Windows 11 on their smartphones. XDA introduces The Renegade Project, which runs Windows 11 on the OnePlus 6T. In this video, Windows 11 is also running on an ARM machine, so pay attention to that as well. Since Windows 11 has been rebuilt to work with ARM of ARM64EC, it seems that it can be started on old terminals.
Both The Renegade Project and Lumia WOA have released the method and source code (downloadable), so if you like it, you can try it in the summer free study! It's just a hobby project, so let's enjoy it at your own risk on a terminal that can be buggy.
