[Seoul Yonhap News] On the 29th, SK Geocentric, a South Korean subsidiary of SK Innovation engaged in environmentally friendly chemical business, joined forces with Japanese chemical manufacturer Tokuyama (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) for high-purity isopropyl for semiconductors. The company announced that it will establish a joint venture to manufacture and sell alcoholic beverages (IPA) in Ulsan, South Korea. Both companies will invest 50% each to establish a new company. A high-purity IPA plant with an annual production capacity of about 30,000 tons will be completed by 2023, and commercial production is scheduled to start in 2024. Tokuyama will provide high-purity IPA manufacturing technology, and SK Geocentric will be in charge of raw material procurement, process management, and marketing. High-purity IPA is used for cleaning semiconductor wafers and liquid crystal panels. The demand for semiconductors alone is expected to grow at an average annual rate of around 8%. In South Korea, demand for high-purity IPA is expected to exceed supply due to the expansion of semiconductor factories by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Currently, there is only one company that produces high-purity IPA in Japan.
